Three things parents need to do when their kid comes out as Transgender or Non-Binary

Listed below are a variety of websites, organizations and other resources that provide information about and for LGBTQ-identified people and those who love them. Their inclusion here does not necessarily imply an endorsement.

Gender Identity

Websites

American Academy of Pediatrics: Supporting & Caring for Transgender Children: This PDF guide is for anyone who knows a transgender or gender-expansive child. It explains what medical and education experts know about transgender children, explores some myths about gender transition in childhood, and offers suggestions for adults with a transgender child in their life.

WPATH: World Professional Association for Transgender Health is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, interdisciplinary professional and educational organization devoted to transgender health. WPATH publishes the Standards of Care and Ethical Guidelines, which articulate a professional consensus about the psychiatric, psychological, medical, and surgical management of gender dysphoria and help professionals understand the parameters within which they may offer assistance to those with these conditions.

Gender Spectrum helps to create gender sensitive and inclusive environments for all children and teens. Their website provides resources, on-line groups, and information about their family and professional conference.

The Family Acceptance Project® is a research, intervention, education and policy initiative that works to prevent health and mental health risks for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) children and youth, including suicide, homelessness and HIV – in the context of their families, cultures and faith communities.

Gender Odyssey is an international conference focused on the needs and interests of transgender and gender diverse children of all ages, their families and supporters, and the professionals who serve them.

The Trevor Project was founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award®-winning short film TREVOR. The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) young people under 25. Their crisis line number is 1-866-488-7386.

Human Rights Campaign represents a force of more than 3 million members and supporters nationwide. As the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organization, HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.

GLSEN provides resources to create safe and affirming schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

The National Center for Transgender Equality advocates to change policies and society to increase understanding and acceptance of transgender people. In the nation’s capital and throughout the country, NCTE works to replace disrespect, discrimination, and violence with empathy, opportunity, and justice.

Families for Transgender Equality (FTE) is a network of families with trans youth, and groups that support these families, who all want to change policies and society to improve trans people’s lives.

Services & Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders (SAGE USA) is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT older people. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources to LGBT older people and their caregivers.

Healthcare Coverage Assistance

The Health Coverage Guide is an interactive tool for transgender people, our families, and caregivers seeking coverage for transition-related care, offering step-by-step instructions for learning what your plan covers and to get pre-authorizations for transition-related care. It’s designed especially for people with private insurance and Medicaid, with resources for those with Medicare as well.

Legal Assistance

Trans Legal Services Network (TLSN) is a project of the National Center for Transgender Equality. It helps ensure every transgender person can navigate the complicated name and gender change processes, and confidently addresses other legal issues they may face.

Lambda Legal is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender persons, and persons living with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.

Transforming Family is a Los Angeles based family support group creating a positive environment for children, adolescents, and their families to explore issues of gender identity. Transfamilies.org Trans Families is a nonprofit organization that has been supporting transgender people and their families since 2008. They run online parent support groups, a trans youth leadership program, special topics groups, and youth support groups.
